Power cords for PCs, office equipment, and servers

A power cord is the part nobody pays attention to while it’s working. People only remember it when it’s missing or melted. Yet every amp reaches the device through that cable, and conductor quality decides whether the plug overheats under load and whether the PSU dies from flaky contact.

Power cable types

• IEC C13 / C14. The most common pair. PCs, monitors, printers, UPS, medical gear — the “classic computer” cord.
• IEC C19 / C20. High-current 16A connectors. Server racks, large UPS, networking gear, pro hardware.
• Schuko plug. Grounded, fits European outlets. The norm for Ukraine.
• NEMA. US-style plugs. Sometimes required for gear imported from the States.
• Extensions and outlet strips. One inlet, multiple C13 outlets — handy in racks.

How to choose

1. Connector family. Match the device inlet. C13 will not physically mate with C19 — different shells.
2. Length. Typical kits are 1.5–1.8 m. Short 0.5 m leads help in dense racks. 3 m+ for odd layouts.
3. Conductor size. 0.75 mm² for light loads; 1.0–1.5 mm² for heavy PCs, servers, UPS feeds.
4. Current rating. Plugs and connectors are labeled (10A, 16A). Do not exceed them.
