Adapters and dongles: video, USB, and networking

Adapters are the diplomats between incompatible standards. One USB-C on the laptop but you need a thumb drive, a monitor, headphones, and charging at the same time. A new monitor is DisplayPort-only while the PC still has HDMI 1.4. Wi-Fi stutters but the ultrabook has no Ethernet jack.

Adapter types

• Video dongles. HDMI ↔ DisplayPort, VGA → HDMI, DVI → HDMI, USB-C → HDMI. Active (with signal conversion) vs passive. VGA is analog, so anything involving VGA is active.
• USB hubs. One USB-C or USB-A fans out to multiple ports (USB-A, USB-C, HDMI, card reader, Ethernet). Ideal for MacBooks and ultrabooks.
• USB-C adapters. Type-C → USB-A for legacy peripherals. Type-C → 3.5 mm for headsets.
• Network adapters. USB → RJ-45 (1G or 2.5G Ethernet), Wi-Fi USB sticks, Bluetooth dongles.
• Splitters. One HDMI to two displays; one Ethernet leg shared across devices (where appropriate).

How to choose

1. Port capabilities. Does your laptop’s Type-C support DisplayPort Alt Mode? If not, a USB-C video adapter will not work.
2. Spec levels. A USB 3.2 Gen 2 hub is wasted on a USB 2 upstream port — and a USB 2 hub on a USB 3 host throws away bandwidth.
3. Power. Hubs with PD passthrough forward charging through the dock — essential for many MacBooks and ultrabooks.
4. Build quality. Cheap dongles run hot and add video noise. Buying PC adapters from a trusted shop saves future headaches.
