Server RAM — DDR3, DDR4, DDR5

Server memory differs from desktop RAM by more than a sticker. ECC fixes bit errors on the fly. Registered (RDIMM) buffers addressing for stability at large capacities. That’s what lets a server run for months without reboots while hosting VMs, databases, and a hypervisor. You don’t build that on ordinary consumer DDR.

Types of server memory

• DDR3 ECC. Older servers on Intel Xeon E5 v1/v2/v3, AMD Opteron. Fading out, but still common in production.
• DDR4 ECC. The workhorse of 2016–2024. Intel Xeon E5 v4, Scalable Gen 1/2/3, AMD EPYC Rome/Milan. Up to 3200 MHz.
• DDR5 ECC. The new baseline. Sapphire Rapids, Genoa, Granite Rapids. 4800–5600+ MHz speeds and higher density.

Bottom line: the memory generation must match the platform. You cannot physically fit DDR4 into a DDR5 slot — or the other way around. Buying server RAM “by looks” is a fast path to “the box won’t POST.”

Module sizes

• 8 GB. Baseline for light jobs, backup servers, proxies, small services.
• 16 GB. The versatile size. Mail servers, file servers, small virtualization farms.
• 32 GB. Standard for virtualization, mid-load business apps, databases.
• 64 GB and up. Heavy lifting: VDI, analytics, AI-style workloads, in-memory DBs, large VMs.

How to choose server RAM

1. Module type. RDIMM is the default for most servers. UDIMM appears on some entry servers and workstations. LRDIMM targets maximum memory per channel.
2. Speed. Faster isn’t automatically better. The server runs all DIMMs at the slowest common frequency. Prefer one speed across the kit.
3. Ranks and DIMMs per channel (DPC). With many modules installed, the controller may downclock automatically. That’s normal.
4. Platform compatibility. Safest path: a part number from the server vendor’s QVL — or guidance from your supplier.
